Molten saltshavebetterthermalpropertiesthansyntheticmineraloil,andhencetheycanbedirectly

usedasheattransferfluidsinsolarpowerplants,butinpracticetheirdirectapplicationsasheat

transferfluidsareconstrainedduetotheirhighfreezingtemperaturepoints.Inthispaper,aclassof

ternarynitratesaltmixturesconsistingof50–80wt%KNO3, 0–25wt%LiNO3 and 10–45wt%Ca(NO3)2

were processedandtested.Experimentalresultsindicatedthatsomemixtureswithinthisrange

exhibitedexcellentthermalproperties,suchasalowmeltingpoint(o100 1C), robustreliability,high-

temperaturestability(upto500 1C) andalowviscosity(e.g.,o5 cPat190 1C). Apartfromthese

desirablethermo-physicalproperties,themanufacturingcostofthesenovelinorganicsaltsHTFs(Heat

TransferFluids)isconsiderablylowerthanthoseoftheexistingcommercialheattransferfluids(HTFs).
